I remembered something today that I had completely forgotten.
I was a latchkey kid. My siblings were all much older than me (the youngest next in line was 9 years older), so by the time I was well into school, I was the only one at home. Mom worked as an apple sorter, and Dad worked at an aluminum plant.
Sometimes after school, I would get lonely… and I would call the free hotline on the phone that had an automated voice telling the time. It was a woman’s voice. I somehow found it comforting.
Such a strange memory.
