Since I mentioned Griffin & Sabine in my last post, I thought I might expound. I found the first book of this series years ago in 1991, in a little book store in my home town. I was perusing the shelves, when I saw an intriguing cover featuring a peculiar parrot on a postcard. But it wasn’t until I opened it up, that I felt an electrical storm of excitement flash through my veins. The book was written in a series of postcards and letters. Letters you could actually take out of real envelopes and read!
I read the first couple of postcards, and was magnetized by the artwork. It was as if this author had climbed into my young brain, and fished out all the daydreams and mysterious notions I had ever had, and trotted them off to a publishing agency. Well, I trotted right up to the cash register and bought the book. I’ve never been the same since.
I had to wait for each book to come out. Wondering, imagining how the story would play out. Savoring every detail. Pouring over the illustrations for clues. The wait was torturous. You who are reading this now, if you’ve never read these books… you get the whole shebang in one hit. You get to sit down and glut yourself page after page, experiencing it all in the course of a quiet afternoon. I honestly don’t know who the luckier person is. :)
